Adoptions

Although adoptions are one of the most enjoyable aspects of the law, they can be a very lengthy and confusing process.  That is why it is important to have an attorney that knows the law and can successfully get your adoption approved.  In any adoption, there must be a termination of parental rights and an established relationship between the child and the adoptive parent.  With an adoption, the child must be in the physical custody of the adoptive parents for at least six months prior to the adoption being finalized.  An exception to this rule is relative adoptions.  Once the court finalizes an adoption, the adoptive parents assume the same legal rights as a biological parent would.  There are several types of adoptions in Tennessee to include;

Adult Adoption

Step-Parent Adoption

Relative Adoption

Private Adoptions

State Adoptions
